Super Chicken

Friday, October 12, 2007 - 01:12 PM

If you didn’t watch last night’s “The Office” (and if you didn’t, what the hell’s wrong with you?), you missed the short skits during some of the commercials promoting Jerry Seinfeld’s new movie, ”Bee Movie”.  The skits had pretty much nothing to do with the movie, but they were pretty funny.  The best one, by far, features Jerry singing the theme song to ”Super Chicken”.  The original, if you’re unfamiliar with Super Chicken (again, what the hell’s wrong with you?), can be found here.

(Unfortunately, that link to NBC was the only video or audio I could find of this.  If I find a better one, I’ll post that.  Hopefully, it’ll show up on YouTube.)

Last Comic

Thursday, September 13, 2007 - 09:20 AM

There wasn’t much on TV last night, and although I should have been practicing my guitar, or going through the vacation photos to start posting them to Flickr, I was feeling lazy.  I landed on Last Comic Standing.  I’m normally not into reality shows, but I happen to really like stand up comedy.  Since, at this point, they were down to the last three comedians, I figured that they would be the “best of the best”.  This turned out to be not so true.

As an aside, the highlight of the first show was last year’s winner, Josh Blue.  He was freakin’ hysterical.  I wanted to see more of him.

But, out of the remaining three comedians for this year, only one was funny at all:  Jon Reep.  I sincerely hope he wins.

There were two shows, back-to-back, and in the second they narrowed it down to the two remaining comics.  Jon was one of the final two, but the other one I couldn’t believe.  In fact, I couldn’t believe he had made it to the final three after seeing his act.

People, Lavell Crawford is not funny at all.  Seriously, I didn’t laugh once during any of his routines.  What’s worse, none of his jokes are even remotely original.  All of his material was old jokes.  He did a rectal exam joke where the punch line was that the doctor should have taken him out to dinner and a movie.  Seriously?  Unbelievable.  He did a joke about hockey being a white man’s sport because it’s a bunch of white guys chasing a black puck.  Are you freakin’ kidding me?! Let’s not even talk about the “fat black man ordering fried chicken” joke.

How is a comedian with no original material even on this show, let alone one of the two finalists?  I don’t have much faith in humanity as it is, but if Jon Reep doesn’t win this thing I’ll be totally blown away.

Funniest show on TV

Tuesday, July 03, 2007 - 08:58 AM

Last night I managed to catch an episode of Flight of the Conchords on HBO.  I had seen these guys’ musical stand-up act before on Comedy Central, which I thought was funny.  Plus, cultural bellwether Lin Brehmer mentioned it in high regards on his morning show, so I decided to check it out.

If you haven’t already caught on to this show, check it out - you won’t be sorry.  (If you don’t have HBO, maybe the episodes will show up on-line somewhere.  Otherwise, I don’t know what to tell you!) This has got to be the funniest show on TV right now; I laughed so hard I was practically in tears.  I immediately went into the “OnDemand” feature on our cable to watch the first two episodes (which I had missed, as a late-comer).

I don’t even know how to describe the show in a way that would do it justice.  You just have to see it for yourself.  Basically, it’s about these two guys from New Zealand who are trying to make it in New York as a band.  They have an ineffectual band manager (who holds band meetings in his office at some New Zealand tourism bureau) and a single, obsessive fan.  Through the course of the show it occasionally morphs into a kind of musical, where the plot turns into a cheesy music video.

Again, describing it does not do it justice.  Trust me, and go check it out for yourself.

Yes, I am.

So, I’ve been seeing previews for a new game show on FOX that premieres tomorrow night.  It’s called “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” The program’s host is Jeff Foxworthy.  I couldn’t think of a more appropriate person to host a TV show that actually glorifies the intellectual decline of this country.  (Okay, maybe Dan Whitney, who you might know as Larry the Cable Guy, would have been more fitting.  But, I suppose even Mark Burnett could see how quickly that would have gotten old!)
